We have liftoff! Nolan has accomplished a feat so great, so epic, that I am shaking with pride as I type this. My baby is a crawler.
That’s right folks, the Great Noldini decided that it was finally time to join the ranks of his peers (and, actually, of some babies 2 months younger than him!) and do the previously unthinkable: exert actual effort toward his goal of movement. Yesterday Nolan pushed himself to the limit, battled past his pesty thigh rolls and crawled for the first time. Thank the good Lord.
Now, he is certainly not a graceful crawler. And he is definitely not a walker. Not even close. Ok I’ll be honest, he’s not even a baby who can pick his haunches up an appreciable distance off of the ground. It takes a sharp eye to see that what he is doing is crawling.
But *technically* Nolan is a crawler, and we’re rolling with it. (Please refer to the definition for crawling above, before you watch the video. Nolan is more of a “drag your body close to the ground sort of baby-athlete). Please don’t judge his form too harshly, just let us celebrate.
Oh, and if you’re wondering what it is that Nolan is struggling so mightily for, it’s a Cheerio. That’s right folks, like his mother, Nolan is motivated by food and food alone. We’re setting up good habits and healthy associations now.
Boom. I’m not even going to hope for the meeting of any further developmental milestones until the next calendar year. We’re maxed out over here.
If anyone else has a baby victory they’d like to share, via photo, video or story, please do so. Perhaps we can create a self-help/motivational collection for the infant and toddler set.

Congratulations Nolan!!! 🙂 That’s awesome! Now you can get into all of your folks stuff! A new adventure awaits! Good Job!!!
Liz
Thanks Jessica! Nolan is flying high today, he really appreciates the public show of support 🙂 It makes him feel validated for his efforts. Although I think he is confusing validated with “valet”, and is kind of expecting someone to park his toy cars for him.
Toni
WAHOOOOO!!!! Can’t wait to see him in action!
Liz
I really hope he can replicate these results in person. If not, what an embarrassment.
Mallory
That’s awesome!
Our daughter just started crawling too. It was that super awkward “is she really crawling or just having a spaz attack?” for a while, but once she figured it out a couple of days later, there was no turning back. Figuratively and literally speaking. She’s everywhere now. As I’m sure your cutie pie is, too!
He’s adorable. Can’t get enough of that hair of his.
Liz
Mallory – I totally hear you on the confusion between actual crawling and spastic floor movement situation. I have notice that today Nolan is really feeling his mojo and crawling toward items less desirable than Cheerios, so I’m pretty sure it’s the real deal!
Erin H
Woohoo Nolan!! That was a pretty long haul for a single Cheerio, though.
C also uses his upper body to drag the rest of himself around. Only difference is that he has yet to master forward motion. He just keeps backing into and under furniture. But this gives me hope!!
Liz
Agreed, such a big effort for such a small reward! I wish I was that motivated by small items!
Oh, and Nolan was doing the backwards thing for weeks. I bet C will have a breakthrough shortly! Let me know when he does!
Emily
Hilarious! As I watch him lift that cheerio the song “Sweet Victory” comes to mind… All for that one cheerio 🙂
Liz
Oh man, we totally should have had a victory sound track ready! That was a lost opportunity….

Nolie, your auntie is so proud of you! I knew you could do it, buddy! Cheerios may have been your first extrinsic motivator, but if you’re anything like your mom, tacos should be next on the list when they’re trying to get you to walk. Don’t you worry, pal. Susu has your back:) xoxo
Liz
Unless Auntie Susu is covered in cheese or taco meats, I’m not sure how she will be able to help Nolan….
Lauren
Congrats Nolan! Miles starting crawling the other night too…his motivation…a diaper coupon.
Liz
Miles is smart, diaper coupons are very practical 🙂

My mom called me and asked “did you see the video of Nolan crawling?”
I told her not yet….no joke she has asked me 4 times since then to MAKE SURE I watch this video! She loves it! I love it! GO NOLAN!!!!
