Ok guys, special request today. One of my favorite people in the world, Adriana (Adzy) sent me the following email yesterday in regards to her sister Nadya, who is due with her first baby imminently:
Nadya is making me make her a PUSH MIX… have you heard of this stuff? It is a music list for the delivery room. I’m like… WTF? Do you want songs like with a beat and with some rage in them to pump you up and have a baby or do you want something zen. She doesn’t know. I don’t know. Any interest in asking your parenting community what they would have wanted in the delivery room? Recommendations? So far, I have gotten Push It by Salt and Peppa and I’m a Survivor by Destiny’s Child.

Here is Adzy posing with her fiancé Victor and Lady Liberty. Victor is the one with the glasses. Lady Liberty is the one fist pumping in the background.
So there you have it. Our “parenting community” has been called upon for help, and we will deliver! (Actually, Nadya will deliver, but we will help with the soundtrack).
Time is of the essence, Nadya could be crowning with this baby at any moment and Adzy needs time to organize her mix. We don’t know how long Nadya will be laboring, so let’s give her a lot to work with. Perhaps Adzy can make two mixes, one for the soothing labor moments, and one for the aggressive labor moments. She can just wait in the delivery room with a giant old school boom box and switch the mix tapes back and forth depending on the mood. It will be awesome.
Your task is simple: leave a comment with your music suggestions for Nadya’s Push Mix! And remember, your input could make or break this birth experience, so think hard. I’m very interested to see what everyone comes up with…

Nadya and Mike, about to jump off the cliff of parenthood. (No literal cliff-jumping, that would be irresponsible this far into the pregnancy).
Good luck Nadya!
Gotta be the “Battle Hymn of The Republic”.
But instead of the verse is “His truth is marching on!” you sing “Our baby’s being born!
Good one Dad. Although I’m not too sure that Nadya will be up for changing the lyrics and performing as a vocalist during the delivery…
Break Free – Ariana Grande
Ways to Go – Grouplove
Eye On The Prize – Marc Broussard
I Like How It Feels (said no one, ever) – Enrique Iglesias
Hot In Here – Nelly
Breaking a Sweat – Skrillex
This is How We Do – Katy Perry
Bottoms Up – Nicki Minaj
Bottoms Up is a good one! You’re not just a pretty face Cat.
I love these lists! I had a “L & D” mix for both kids, basically just music that makes me happy. I thought I might need some help being happy, apparently. Dave Matthews Band, Barenaked Ladies (pun intended), 90’s hip hop and 80’s music. Lots of 80’s! Aaron was born to “Video Killed the Radio Star” and Amelia was born to “American Baby”. It’s bizarre that I remember that but the music kept me sane!!
Wow, nice timing Amelia!
Thanks all for the recommendations!
Hahaha I had C-sections for both kiddos (THANKS pre-eclampsia!) so I was both woefully unprepared and not in a situation to listen to music. But this is all hilarious to read so I hope you’ll do a follow up with what they went with 😉
Carolyn, I was just thinking how disconcerting it would have been if they were blasting pump up music during my c-section. I think I would have lost my shit.
Like a Prayer_Madonna
just because every soundtrack should include Madonna
I made 5 cds of music, because it every song was VERY IMPORTANT, and I wasn’t sure which one I would want at any moment. It was nice (in theory) to have as entertainment while I was laboring for 29 hours. However, because I was so hormonal, every song made me start crying, and I’d make my husband switch to the next track. So we listened to 30 seconds of every song before I started sobbing. Then I had an emergency C-section, so there was no push time music. But based on my experience, I’d say funny, light-hearted songs are the way to go.
Anne, the idea of you shuffling through song after song to avoid an emotional outburst cracks me up! Although it probably didn’t crack your husband up at the time…
My husband was in charge of the music. I know he put songs like our first dance from our wedding (ben harper In the Colors). I don’t remember hearing any of it until I was in transition and the tub and heard Ben Folds rendition of Bitches Aint’ Shit. We all burst out laughing. Yes laughing during transition. Well for one short moment…
That is awesome timing! Bitches Ain’t Shit is the perfect anthem for any baby to hear upon entry into the world.
Talk About Sex – salt & Pepper
Just thought I’d let the group know what finally made it onto the mix. It is an awesome mix with push/pep-up themed songs, feel good/lady empowerment songs, and a sweet lullaby-type section at the end. Commenters were right that I couldn’t actually be bothered with the mix when it came to the delivery room, but it was great in early labor and now. Here is the spotify link (hope it works). Thanks for your input Mothership Down and friends!
