“Some Good News” (And Other Things That Cheered Me Up This Week)

Thomas, on the lookout for some good news.

There is no getting around the fact that we are all living through a shitstorm of epic proportions. Like a glutton for punishment I watch the news every day just to remind myself that, yup, we are actually pretty screwed right now! It’s depressing. I don’t know how many times I need Governor Andrew Cuomo to personally deliver bad news to me, but apparently it’s at least 2-4 times a day.

But there is another thing that I’ve noticed these last few weeks, and it’s the fact that people are seriously amazing! Not those kids on the beach enjoying Spring Break, they suck. But lots of other people – AMAZING! And not just the cast of Tiger King. I’m talking about lots of other people as well.

There are of course the real heroes of this crisis – the doctors and nurses and all the various essential personnel keeping our heads above water when everything is trying to sink us. We cannot thank them enough. Seriously, there is no amount of thanks for what people are sacrificing right now to try to keep all of us safe.

Outside of that hero group, there’s another group emerging. There are the astoundingly creative, funny, talented people who are delivering a bit of cheer to us, from a safe social distance. As scary and bleak as everything is right now, there are people who are able to make us laugh so we don’t just, you know, cry in between “distance learning” sessions.

Here are some of my favorite things from the past week. I hope they bring you a bit of cheer too.

This guy’s impression of Trump talking about Coronavirus and Easter is hysterical and unbelievably accurate.

For every parent implementing their school’s distance learning plan during the day and moonlighting as a Tiger King super fan at night, this is a gift from Mommy Shorts to you: The 10 Phases of Homeschooling told in Tiger King Memes.

This family’s quarantine version of Les Mis is nothing short of amazing. It is funny and smart and brilliant. I wish my mom could have seen this one, we saw Les Mis together when I was a kid many times. Just great stuff, and I want to be quarantined with this family if I ever have to be quarantined again.

My Boyfriend Andrew Cuomo’s New Girlfriend Is America by Michelle Collins had me laughing out loud last night.

“Some Good News” with John Krasinski is, well, just that: only good news, delivered by everyone’s favorite Dunder Mifflin employee (Ok, I don’t know who your favorite Dunder Mifflin employee was – Michael? Pam? Any Dwight fans?” No matter, this is the type of cheer we can all use right now.

I loved Dave Barry’s article: “HEALTH OFFICIALS: Wash our hands.” THE PEOPLE: “We’ll buy more toilet paper!” As Dave puts it: “There was a time when going to Target did not feel like a daring and dangerous mission. That time, of course, was long ago, by which I mean last week. The good old days!”

And this video, sent to me by my Dad, had me laughing in spite of myself.

Alright, that’s all the cheer I can round up for today. I know so many people are struggling right now. This is unbelievably stressful. We all need to keep an eye on our mental health, so if a small bit of “some good news” can help any of us smile, I’m all for it.
